7/31/2023 0 Comments Best waterfall hikes in oahu![]() The “steps” up Koko Head are old railroad ties. This beautiful view you have, however, only after you have walked up the 1,048 steps. Some ropes are a bit, shall we say, sketchy, which is why Crouching Lion is not officially open. So your life is literally in the hands of a stranger’s rope-tying skills. Some parts of this trail rely on ropes, but they’re only on the more slippery sections for balance. It’s a really steep hike when you reach these amazing views after 30 to 45 minutes of trekking. But this can only be enjoyed after a steep and quite challenging climb up the “Crouching Lion”. You’ll find this trail near the community of Kaawa, Kaneohe and it offers some panoramic views. The city is now responsible for maintaining security until an outside operator is chosen to run the staircase. Ownership of the Haiku Stairs in Hawaii has been transferred to the city of Honolulu in hopes of transforming the currently off-limits hike into a public attraction. Last year, nearby Kuoloa Ranch (the filming location for movies like “Jurassic Park” and “Jumanji”) offered to take the stairs onto their property and build a ticketed attraction if they were ever removed from their original location, according to Hawaii News Now. It is expected that the office will set aside $1 million for the project.īut there is a chance that the stairs won’t disappear completely - they may just relocate. The mayor’s office must still formally approve the removal of the stairs and set a time frame to do so. Security has been improved and there is now not only more security, but also a frequent (but not constant) police presence. UPDATED 2021: Fines of approximately $1000 USD have been reported and paid recently. As I said, this “hike” is only for experienced climbers and mountaineers! If you are not, please consider this tip as a warning not to go this way under any circumstances. The following should generally be the rule for this trail: Just go as far as you can and are confident enough to go, and keep in mind that you will have to come back the same way. At the end of the trail you will have to climb a stone wall with ropes, so you should be in good shape. You will need sturdy and stable footwear, hiking boots are best. If it has been raining properly for days before, we do not recommend hiking the trail. We recommend the legal trail Moanalua Valley Trail to Haiku Stairs. The station has not been in operation for decades, but guards patrol the start of the stairs to prevent visitors from climbing the not-so-hazardous hike with its dilapidated steps. The 4,000 or so steps “up into the sky” were built during World War II to make a secret military broadcasting station accessible. We came back completely wiped out, filthy, but happy and full of adrenaline. We took on the challenge and even walked the 15 mile legal trail (there and back). The Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven) is a MUST for adrenaline junkies. ![]() After hiking several of the ridges, we have compiled a list of the best hikes on Oahu that will leave you amazed.Įvery single hike on this list was a trail and, in some cases, challenge that we personally experienced. After spending several weeks on the island, our urge to hike several times a week was extremely high.
